Atletico Madrid Edge Bayern In Champions League Semi-Final, Ended 1 – 0
A solo effort from Saul Ñíguez Esclapez in the 11th minute was enough to give Atletico Madrid a 1:0 lead in the first leg semifinal match against Bayern Munich on Wednesday night.
The midfielder went on a probing run, beating three Bayern players before curling a remarkable finish off the far post to beat Manuel Neuer.
Bayern had more possession but couldn’t find a way through the very compact Atletico defence with their goalkeeper; Oblak also on song all night.
The visitors nearly drew level in the 54th minute when David Alaba picked up the ball 30 yards out before releasing a strike that has Oblak beaten but rattled off the underside of the bar.
However, the hosts almost doubled their lead against the run of play when Fernando got into the area, stepped inside his marker before rattling a strike off the inside of the post.
